This building is located on campus at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and it was originally the aquatic center for the university. In the fall 2020 semester, the focus of studio was office spaces. I chose to design an office building for Sony Music Entertainment. My main focus was finding different ways to define public and private spaces.
THE ENTRANCE
For the entry to this building, I used programming to define a central event space atrium. The large public stair case allows people to sit while also providing access to the second level. Greenery is used to indicate the edges of the staircase and to define the surrounding open spaces.
THE SPACE
The public/open office spaces have lower ceilings while the more private spaces have higher ceilings. This technique was used for noise reduction in an effort to promote work ethic. A main focus was put on how to make a space private without blocking it off completely with a wall. The proposed solution to this issue was to use greenery as dividers in between desks and conference tables.
PRIVATE EXPERIENCE
The private space of the office contains conference rooms + private executive offices. The space also contains a lounge area for the employees and clients. As you can see in the rendering, the ceiling condition reflects the privacy of the space. Lower ceilings indicate more privacy + noise reduction while higher ceilings indicate more public areas.
PUBLIC EXPERIENCE
The public space of this office is the main office space for employees. The space features multiple "fishbowl" conference rooms and individual desk spaces. The ceiling conditions are also meant to help with acoustics. The privacy of the individual desks was promoted with planter boxes between the desks in order to help productivity and reduce distraction
