CONNECTIVITY
Creating a comfortable environment within the spaces that we design is important for the well-being of the people occupying the space. While we have come a long way since slavery, racism is not to be forgotten and should be considered in the design process. Seating is one of the most important design pieces because while sitting we eat, socialize, and spend time with loved ones. All of these reasons are why seating should be thoughtfully designed and inclusive for everyone. In this furniture piece, there is an appreciation for how far we have come with providing equality to all races, whilst also giving the notion that the battle for equality is not yet won.
FORMICA COMPETITION - 'PAPERLESS DESK'
My project for the FORM Student Innovation Competition consists of a ‘paperless’ desk. When brainstorming ideas for this competition, I was thinking about the next generation and their needs. Something that is very prevalent in our society is the idea of being paperless and producing less waste. This has led to many students purchasing Ipad’s and other tablets to take their notes etc. My design incorporates this idea in a simplistic way. The Paperless Desk features a 12” x 14” slot to place your tablet so that it is flush with the surface of the desk to allow for effortless note taking and work. The slot has a removable piece that can be placed into a second slot for storage. This is because while using a computer, the tablet slot would not be useful. The tablet slot also features the FORMICA Wireless Charging Laminate to charge while using the tablet. Another important feature of the desk is the planter boxes. I incorporated the planter boxes to act as a privacy screen instead of having regular cubicle dividers. This is important to me because I have done research on cubicles and my research has shown that cubicles are a very bleak and depressing way of having privacy. The plants in my renderings are snake plants and I chose these specifically because they require minimal water and sunlight.
